About Your Parish and Council

Your Parish Council

The Parish Council is an elected body responsible for local government within Wherwell. The Parish Council represents the interests of the parish and liaises with other bodies involved in local government in the provision of local services, for example Hampshire County Council, and Test Valley Borough Council. The Parish Council receives funding primarily from the Borough Council through its precept - the annual allowance which sets the budget for the provision of services. The Parish Council may raise additional funds, directly from the community, and through grants, for special projects. The Parish Council is elected in its entirety every four years. Councillors serve for the full four years, and are unpaid. Councillors are governed by a mandatory code of conduct, which includes obligations to act with probity, and to disclose any personal interests which may be relevant to their work as a councillor.

Meetings: WPC meets seven times per year, on the second Tuesday of the month, at the Colonel Jenkins Memorial Hall, Church Street, Wherwell, SP11 7JJ at 7.00 pm. Meetings normally last up to two hours. There may be occasions when additional meetings are held to discuss specific topics. Additionally a Parish Assembly is arranged annually in May. Members of the public are welcome at all Meetings, and have the opportunity to ask questions before the official business of the Council meeting begins. WPC Meeting timetable can be found here.

Members of the public can contact any parish councillor or the clerk with any question they may have regarding the parish at any time (please see contact details below). We will endeavour to give a full reply as possible. Alternatively please attend parish council meetings where general matters can be raised during the open session at the start of the meeting. If residents wish for a particular matter to be discussed on the agenda of a parish council meeting then at least one weeks' notice is required prior to the agenda being published. Agendas, outlining the business to be discussed, are displayed on the parish council noticeboard in Wherwell, and posted on this website giving three clear working days, according to the law. Minutes are also published in the same way.
